I don't know why I opened it. Maybe I was tired of hiding. Maybe I wanted to confront him. Maybe some sick part of me wanted to see what would happen.

He stood there in a t-shirt and sweatpants. Looking more human than I'd ever seen him.

"Can I come in?"

"No."

"Fair enough." He leaned against the doorframe. "I owe you an apology. I've been... inappropriate. I know that."

I said nothing.

"There's something about you, Lily. I can't explain it. From the moment I met you..." he trailed off.

"You married my mother."
