"Please. Not in front of her."

That broke something in me. Even now, even after everything, I couldn't hurt a child.

"Tomorrow," I said. "Coffee shop on Main Street. Ten AM. You're going to tell me everything."

"And if I don't?"

"Then I'll come back here. And I won't be quiet next time."

He showed up at 9:45. I was already on my third coffee.

He sat across from me looking like he'd aged ten years overnight.

"I was in debt," he said. "Bad debt. The kind you don't survive."
