I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move. My coffee slipped from my fingers and exploded on the concrete.

He heard the crash. Looked up. Saw me.

For one second — one eternal, excruciating second — I saw recognition in his eyes. Fear. Guilt.

Then nothing. His face went blank. He turned away, said something to the woman, and walked in the opposite direction.

Like I was a stranger.

Like he hadn't promised to love me until death did us part.

I ran after him. I don't remember deciding to — my body just moved.

"James! JAMES!"
